this was my first attempt of learning Illustrator cs4 on my own. I found some great tutorials online which taught me how to use the pencil tool to stencil this from a photograph.

Broken

These images where taken with a nikon D90 and a macro lens. I was capturing a bonfire our landlord had created outside our house, from old mattresses and furniture. My theme from a uni brief was broken.

Disorganization

Here are some new images i took today. I think my project may go in the direction of organisation- in which i will 4 final images. These will all link in some way but how, i'm not sure as of yet.

Disorganization

A photography brief of 'The Everyday' led me to research a photographer named Bastiem Schnidt who produced some beautiful work around the idea of, Identity in Narrative of the Everyday.
A quotation of hers i used to stem my idea was, 'disorganization makes itself at home.' I looked into how I could show organisation around me thats really just an organised mess, and hopefully turn that into a narritve piece of uni life. Here are some initial photographs to start me off.

These are taken of areas around my room, i photographed how i found it and changed the images to black and white.

My Commission

I have now finished my commission for the Christmas carol book I was asked to do. I was asked to draw 30 images, one each chapter and the front cover. i really enjoyed doing this as it was a taste of what i shall be doing after uni and a challenge to get it all done in time!

I like just taking photography when its not staged, so i can get it as natural as possible. I generally like taking photos of people who i know and are friends with. I think it adds more of a narrative to my images compared to when i try to plan a photo. These where taken in Bath where i live on hot day where we were relaxing on our roof.

Photography development

This one was taken of the Christmas stools in Bath. it was a little under exposed because the sun was really low at this point. I really like the expression of the person focused in the background looking up and how they all seem so engrossed in what they are doing.

I asked these men if I could take a photo of them, so they posed but this must have been captured in the middle of that. It was the most difficult one to develop because the hand was so light compared to the men's faces. I ended up burning the hand and part of the line of sausages to the right so I could get detail in the darker areas.

I was sitting in starbucks trying to take photos subtley. I particularly liked this one because of how she contrasts to the background around her.

My Commission

As mentioned in a previous post, i have been working on a commission where I will be drawing an image for each chapter of a Christmas Carol book. My try out was the carol Good King Wenceslas which the author told me he would like a black and white line drawing, 8/10 cm.

I followed his instructions, although i found it harder than expected to come up with my 'own style' to show him. The end result i produced was slightly larger as I wanted to add detail and I thought it could be edited down to size very easily on a computer. I sent it and was offered the job!

typography- geometric alphabet

We recently where given a project to design our own geometric alphabet from the basic shapes, and by using a 10mm grid we organized the size and shape.
To plan I sketched out the alphabet in circles, triangles and a combination of the before mentioned. I then tried out using one letter that i had created in repetition to create all the letters. Through this, it was obvious that the letter K that had been drawn worked best because of the tessellation. This was what I came up with.

Surprise Typography

This is a photo that I took when walking around the Southgate shopping center in Bath. I really like the negative space the type gives which I think makes the shop look more unique.

'the most beautiful thing'

For one of our assignments we were told to walk around the grounds of our campus and record the most beautiful object we find. It was a way of opening our eyes to the un-obvious things around us that we don't necessarily see every day. I really liked the concept of this as you can see so many new things when you see the world from a different perspective.
